The artwork was commissioned by Legal & General for the reception space of 101 St Martins Lane and is integrated within the main building fabric. Aldilà – an Italian word meaning ‘beyond, the other side’ takes the visitor along reception and into the atrium, the heart of the building.
The installation comprises a rhythmic sequence of resin panels with coloured pigments and golden textures. They are installed perpendicular to the walls of reception, with their size decreasing as you walk toward the atrium creating a false perspective. This provides visual continuity and adds a sense of dynamism to the arrival space, with the strong colours of the artwork contrasting the soft palette used for the rest of the reception. At the end of this sequence, in the middle of the atrium, a golden cube is suspended from the ceiling at double height.
Almost replicating a cosmic arrangement, the golden cube – made of pure light captured within the resin panels – acts as the focal and warmest point as well as materialising the core of the building. Warmer colours are used for the cube and the panels closest to it while colder colours are chosen for the panels closest to the entrance, generating a unifying gradient. Unlike the panels, the cube is physically unreachable, and only open to one side, where the light is revealed and marks the end of the sequence, a mystery that is unveiled through a journey of discovery.
